Maternity Beach Photoshoots: The Ultimate Guide to Capturing Magical Moments on the Costa Brava
Written by Jordi Dalmau, Spain destination wedding photographer. Last update July 2026
Dreaming of beach maternity photos that truly capture this special time? As a maternity photographer specializing in natural seaside sessions, I’ve photographed in most of the places in la Costa Brava. In this guide, I’ll share everything you need for stunning, authentic beach maternity photos.
Why have your maternity session on the beach?
Soft, flattering natural light
During golden hour (just after sunrise or before sunset) the light is warm and gentle. It beautifully highlights your skin and belly in a way no flash can mimic. I look for those magical moments when Mediterranean light softly wraps around you… a visual poem.
Movement, breeze, freedom
The sea has a calming effect. Nervous moms-to-be often relax instantly with the sea breeze and waves. Lightweight flowing fabrics catch the wind beautifully, creating images full of movement and natural grace.
Natural textures: sand, sea, sky
Think of the beach as a giant natural studio. The mix of rocks, sand, waves, and expansive sky creates meaningful, unique settings for maternity portraits.
Creative ideas for beach maternity outfits
Colors that work beautifully:
White and cream: timeless and elegant
Earth tones: beige, camel, sandy hues
Navy or sea-green: echo the water
Soft coral: adds warmth, especially with sun-kissed skin
Fabrics to love:
Muslin and gauze: airy and dreamy
Linen: relaxed and Mediterranean
Soft knitwear: comfy and natural
What to skip:
Avoid bold prints that clash, neon shades, and stiff fabrics that don’t move in the breeze.
Perfect timing for beach sessions
Golden Hour (1, 2 hours before sunset): Warm, soft light; fewer people; comfortable temperature.
Blue Hour (just after sunset): Romantic blue tones; silhouette magic.
Avoid midday: Harsh light, unflattering shadows, and uncomfortable posing conditions.
Including your partner naturally
Walk along the shoreline: candid and heartfelt
Back hugs with hands on your belly: timeless and meaningful
Play in the waves: lifelike, joyful energy
Whispers and laughter: intimate and spontaneous
Poses that feel effortless and elegant
Always flattering poses:
Profile silhouette with a hand on your belly
Seated on a rock, elegant and comfy
Walking along the shore, full of life
Standing at the water’s edge, refreshing and airy
Less common but lovely:
Laying sideways in the sand with a flowing dress
Sitting at the shoreline with legs extended
Arms raised, celebrating new life

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best gestational time?
Weeks 28, 36: you have a beautifully round belly and still feel comfortable. The best months are May, October. I break the timing down, week by week, in my guide to when to schedule your maternity photos.
Best months for Costa Brava?
June & September: gorgeous light, few tourists, warm water.
July & August: Better for sunrise sessions as sunsets can be too crowded.
April, October: works too, but water is not that warm.
Can I bring multiple outfits?
Absolutely. I recommend 2, 3 options, elegant to casual. Make sure they’re comfy and easy to change.
What if it’s windy or rainy?
Wind is beautiful and dynamic. If it rains, I have covered alternatives nearby.
Where do you shoot?
Calella de Palafrugell, Tossa de Mar, Cadaqués, l’Escala, Begur, some of the region’s most photogenic beaches.
Can we go into the water?
Yes! I love ankle dips and candid moments. Deeper water depends on your comfort and trimester.
How long does the session last?
Typically 1.5, 2 hours: enough time for outfit changes, different backgrounds, and relaxed moments.
What’s included in the session?
Pre-session consultation
1 – 1,5 hours of shooting
Private online gallery between 40, 70 edited high-res images
